A BMORENEWS Tribute to All the Mothers in the World

TGR: Only Tears of Joy (Happy Mother’s Day)

By Doni Glover, www.bmorenews.com

(BALTIMORE – May 9, 2009) – One thing that all humanity understands is Mother’s Day. It is not the same, no doubt, in every culture; not everyone celebrates motherhood on the same day. Nonetheless, few would argue the significance of taking a moment to say “Thank you” to our mothers. After all, if it were not for them – where would we be?

A Muslim told me a long time ago that we are to love our mothers twice and our fathers once. Having had my mom (Lillie Juanita Glover) pass over some 24 years ago, I can truly relate.

The first Mother’s Day after she passed in ’85, I was no good; I cried like a baby. It would take me years to comprehend what had happened. It would take me an eternity to say what she means to me. I have come to believe that as long as I call her name, she lives. I have also come to the point of trying to be supportive of people who have recently lost their mother.

This is what I tell them: She wouldn’t want you to sit on the curb and mope. No! She would want you to get out there, be productive, be loving, and enjoy life each and every single day to its fullest. After all, I believe we’ll see them again.

As for those whose moms are still with us, I selfishly encourage them to love their mothers, no matter what they do, no matter how much they get on our nerves, no matter what they say: Love them. You only get one. So, take every opportunity available to spend some quality time with them. Give them flowers right now. Hug them and say “I love you.” Trust me, she will appreciate it.

And if the recession has you down and your pockets are in a pinch, fear not. If anybody understands the concept, it is Mommy. What she treasures the most, regardless of how much she loves gifts, is that hand-made card from back in the day, maybe a little breakfast in bed, and more than that – some peace and quiet.

The Bible speaks about a virtuous woman – how she gets up early to make the doughnuts, how her man is loved in the community, and how essential she is to us all. And so, I just wanted to take a minute and say “Happy Mother’s Day” to all of the mothers, grandmothers, great grandmothers, and mothers-to-be.

You carried us in your belly for nine months, wiped our butts, love us unconditionally, wiped our tears and told us everything would be alright. You never told us anything to hurt us, and if you could, like the songwriter suggests, you would protect and shield us from any and all of life’s hardships. And you constantly said, "Learn ... so you can earn."

“I’ll always love my momma, she brought me in this world!” “Dear momma…” “Silver gray hair neatly combed in place” “Grandma’s hands clapped in church on Sunday morning” And my all time favorite, “Sadie”.

This is our little BMORENEWS.com tribute to all of the mothers out there. For washing our dirty clothes, for reminding us to take a bath, for never forgetting to tell us to change our underwear, for plucking us up side the head when we forgot our manners, for taking us with you to vote, teaching us to save our money and for always encouraging us to do our best … thank you and "Happy Mother’s Day" today, tomorrow, and always!
