"...Two years of stalling tactics by the County Council prevented completion of the statue by Fred’s Army. Currently, Talbot County and Easton elected officials have placed obstacles in the pathway of Fred’s Army that are undoubtedly based on the racist attitudes of its members,” said Jackson-Amis. Council tactics have refused to allow the African American Archeologists, Dr. Anna Agbe-Davies and Alexandra Jones access to the courthouse grounds to complete a required survey. Constantly, the Council changed the design requirements for the statue and after Fred’s Army had fully complied with the changes directed by Council, it then refused to give permission for the installation of the statue.

The Glover Report: Baltimore State’s Attorney Pat Jessamy, Once Again, Faces Opposition

Baltimore City State’s Attorney Pat Jessamy said yesterday at her 62^nd birthday celebration that facing political opposition is nothing new.

She stated that she has always had challenges from individuals who sensed that they could do the job better. However, from the strong turn-out yesterday at her annual party at the Baltimore Rowing Club, I can only suggest to her challengers that they come with their A-game.

Surrounded by the likes of political strategists Pat Scott and Larry Gibson, there is no doubt that Jessamy will run another formidable campaign for re-election. Further, I might add that she appeared quite indomitable as she stood on a ladder in the center of the party to give her campaign speech. Clearly, she rallied her supporters with an upbeat message – full of hope and vigor.

The Maryland primary election occurs in exactly 8 weeks. On that day, many politicians will either secure or re-secure their seats as Maryland is a 2-to-1 Democratic state. In Baltimore City, Democrats rule 9-to-1. Hence, the primary is the finish line in many races. Harford County, on the other hand, tends to go the other way. So, several Republicans can rest comfortably after Tuesday, September 14^th, knowing that they have 4 years to serve.

Yep, the battle for many politicians is in full swing. November, however, is when the big show goes down as the two titans, Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley and former Republican Gov. Robert Ehrlich will square-off in what could be the biggest political re-match in Maryland history.

Firstly, let me say that I have a lot to learn about being a businessman.

After 8 years in business, every single day is a learning experience. However, it can be done. One successful business owner once told me about 4 years ago that to be able to grow a business in such a down economy was nothing short of miraculous.

No, I have not clocked a million dollar year … yet; but, in time, my friend.

I do what I do because I believe it is my calling, my passion, my purpose. I have met a lot of people here in America and during my travels abroad. I have come to realize that there are certain universal truths that apply to all humankind. There are certain laws of karma and reciprocity that permeate any environment, any climate – regardless of one’s surroundings.

TGR: The Reality of an Entrepreneur

I have always believed that there is a special blessing out there in the universe for the African American entrepreneur. I don’t know why. I just do.

Maybe, it is our historical plight as a people. Maybe, it is something transcendental that comes from our ancestors. Maybe, it is just faith.

I mean, my daddy was an entrepreneur. My mom had her run as well. And somewhere along the line, I too was bitten to go out there and do something. Mind you, I have a lot of respect for the person who can do the 9-to-5. As for me, it would have to be a really special job. And the last really special job led me to entrepreneurship (A very special “Thank you” to Diane Bell-McKoy). So, to say the least, I believe that running my own business is a calling … a calling from on high.

Now, I'll be among many to say that I haven't seen or care to see anything BETish since 2001. BET to me has been the epitome of Black Exploitation Television with it's always "entertaining" but abundantly garbage-assed for all seasons programming, which I refuse to watch. However, after seeing a number of FB status updates on Chris Brown on yesterday, I was a bit stunned, intrigued, yet at the same time, fascinated at the degree of discussion that came as a result of his so-called (at the time anyway) breakdown. The comedic and uplift therein got me to thinking "what's this all about?" So much from so many tells me a lot.

17th Annual Rays of Hope Awards & Scholarship Breakfast

It was around 1993 that I met N. Scott Phillips. He presented me with a scholarship from Household Finance Corporation at a ceremony at Mondawmin Mall. I’m pretty sure that was the first time I had heard of Black Professional Men, Inc.

He invited me to one of their monthly meetings. 17 years later, I can attest that the organization – founded by Phillips, Edwin Avent, and Drew Hawkins in 1991 – has done so much to “ensure the future of African American males” in the Greater Baltimore area.

Over those years, I have been blessed with many relationships with the brothers of BPM: from Omar Muhammad to my oldest best friend, Marty Williams – BPM has been the platform for a lot of support over the years. Through ups and downs, people like Bob Ingram have taken me under the wing, hipped me to some things, and encouraged me to be the best that I can be. Their only requirement: Pass it on!

As a scientist who has spent the last 10 years addressing this topic while at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, I believe that this type of dialogue is essential to improving our country’s response to HIV/AIDS. This conversation needs to continue, but more importantly, it needs to be followed by collective action to end the national tragedy such that future generations of Black men do not face HIV infection as a rite of passage. TGR: The People Rally Today at Baltimore City Hall

Some black leaders have called a gathering today (5.17.10) at Baltimore’s City Hall. The word is, Rev. Al Sharpton is coming … along with major media attention. It appears as though it has come time … even in a statewide election year 2010 … for the “chickens to come home to roost.”

Blacks in Baltimore are making a claim.

Part of the most loyal voting bloc of the National Democratic Party – in a 9-to-1 Democratic town and a 2-to-1 Democratic State has decided to rise up and, after all these years, and finally demand what is ours.

I have been a member of the National Association of Black Journalist (NABJ) off and on for over twenty years while working as a journalist, and as a public relations and marketing professional. However when it came time for me to integrate my profession into the Baltimore/Howard County community whether it was pro bono or for profit I learned from the Association of Black Media Workers (ABMW). I was inspired by George Collins, Ernie Boston, Terry Owens, Edie House, Maria Broome, Phyllis Reese, Sandy Mallory, Curt Anderson, and others.
