His speech tonight will follow three days of incredible oratories by people like his wife - Michelle, Sen. Edward Kennedy, Sen. Hillary Clinton, President Bill Clinton, and his running mate, Delaware Senator Joe Biden.

As the son of two entrepreneurs, I am a witness to the fact that black business owners need and desire the support of family, first and foremost.

It is a terrible thing when family, one’s blood relations, is not behind you – cheering you on. As the old adage goes, “There’s no place like home.” Hence, when one has the backing of those who are most familiar with you and your dreams, one can truly rise, soar, and conquer any mountain. On the other hand, many entrepreneurs have found the need to build a new network filled with individuals who then become one’s extended family.

Hell, even the three last bastions of historical black economic power – the barber shop, the beautician, and the funeral director – find themselves and their industries under economic attack. Mind you, these entities have been %100 black supported. Even more, many of these businesses have taken care of us even when our money was short.

Quite honestly, if black people are looking for Obama to be merely a Civil Rights leader of the same ilk as MLK or Malcolm X, then black people are clueless. Sure, he will pay the necessary attention to doing what he can to help even the playing field, but an Obama administration alone is in no way going to correct all of the ills and issues of the black community. And for any black person to think so is ludicrous.

A staunch champion for the people, few young people today know that his history is as rich as his accomplishments. For instance, back in the 1960’s, Barry led the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). He made a name for himself by fighting racial prejudice and discrimination. Few today know that he also took a bullet in 1977 as he attempted to defend the district Building during the Hanafi Mulsim Siege.

The Democrats must find some internal fortitude, and be about the business of defining the Republicans - all the while exploiting every possible weakness the right-wingers have. And, the Democrats, I believe, must do it now and not let up until the election in the fall.

And prayerfully, this national and international political momentum will translate into a reinvigorated attitude for local aspiring politicians. On this note, names like Mary Washington and Wesley Wood come to mind. Names like Tara Andrews and Nick Mosby and Liz Smith also come to mind. When I think of people like the late Eric Easton and Robert Stokes and Ertha Harris and Bill Goodin and C.D. Witherspoon, I am clearly reminded that although the road may seem dark at times, there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

On Friday, the former First Lady told the South Dakota Argus Leader's editorial board a very horrific, ignorant and deadly thing: "My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right?...........We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."

In case the implication was missed, allow me to explain. By making this comment, Sen. Clinton has possibly placed the idea of someone assassinating Sen. Obama right in the public eye. Mind you, prior to this lethal rhetorical blunder, he already had beefed up Secret Service security.

I write to you in the spirit of those who lived and died to build a “more perfect nation,” of those who dreamed of a better tomorrow, of those who dared to stand up for right when everybody else chose wrong.

As noted by W.E.B. DuBois at the beginning of the last century, the issue of the color line is still a challenge we face today.

Not to play victim (because I personally despise that), but the question of “when” is long overdue.

When will America grow up into a mature adult?

Black Men Missing In Public Education: A State of Emergency

I can safely state that too often, black men are not engaged in the education of our children.

I think it’s also safe to say that our children are in serious trouble. Public education, particularly in America’s urban centers, is so heavily challenged such that our beloved educators who rise every morning just to teach our children are too bombarded with behavioral issues. Too often, they cannot get to the matter of teaching because little Tony won’t act right.

Why? Somewhere along the line, I believe – and so do others – that a black man has failed to make a positive impression in hisor her mind. Little Jada is not learning because a black man, too often, has failed to be a part of her story. For a litany of reasons, the black family is broken. And if not broken, at least fractured.
