The continuing embarrassing situation became a desperate matter for Ms. Gallo in the Rhode Island public school system. The shameless teachers and administrators boasted an average salary of $72,000 - $78,000 a year in a town where the average salary was only $22,000.Thankfully, Ms. Gallo became fed up and demanded that student results become a priority for these hypocritical and selfish teachers and demanded six changes that she knew would turn around the unaccountability of that school. These changes included: Being subjected to new standards of professional evaluations, adding 25 minutes to the work day, meeting with other professionals weekly for planning sessions, eating lunch with students one day a week, a two-week training session in the summer, and tutoring, occasionally: All of which I am shocked were not a priority and demanded from these teachers in the first place.

TGR: Will Leronia Josey Make County History?

Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver could have his hands full this election season - that is, if Ms. Josey decides to put her bid in for his seat. While Oliver is the first black to serve on the County Council, a loss to Josey would make her the first black woman to serve on the Baltimore County Council - a crew that consists mostly of white males. Move over, guys!

A black president; a possible black governor; seems only logical to me.

Op/Ed: Will the real responsible media please stand up

Jim Morrison said that ‘whoever controls the media controls the mind!’ Yet today’s media has seemed to have shifted it’s interest from responsible investigative reporting to a more instant on-demand format of sound bytes and hybrid headlines.

From the advent of social media tools such as YouTube and Facebook to the reduction in senior staff and publications of print media, the lack of real journalism has ceased to exist. However who is truly to be blamed, the reporters’ who spew the untruth without proper fact checks or the consumers of such information who propagate this gossip as factual?

TGR: In Extraordinary Times: Proud to be Amongst the Living

Despite all that is messed up, I am taken back to grandma’s favorite hymn, #325, in the good ol’ Baptist Hymnal: “We’ll understand it better bye and bye.” I’m taken back to the praying man’s visit every Monday at 4 pm and the long, long prayers he would utter. I think of drinking tea and eating Graham crackers with grandpop before grandma got home.

Friends, it is easy to focus on the negative. It is easy to throw the towel in on life. It is easy to concede, to give up, to quit. I don’t know about you, but I refuse to do so. I just can’t. I won’t. There is a certain sense of entitlement of expanded territory that I simply demand of myself and those around me, as ordained by God. I say, mediocrity is for the lame. This kid here expects the very best that God has to offer. Come hell or high water, I’ll just have to take the hits; but progress, I insist, is imminent.

For the record, to date there has been no response from the BCPS or from Dr. Andres Alonso. For the record, I sent a request to the communications department for a response via video, radio, or print.

Mind you, this is all on camera. Check the tape.

Pardon my judgement, but something seems fundamentally wrong, especially when former Baltimore City Police Commissioner Kevin P. Clark was immediately ousted for an alleged domestic incident.

How come nobody is asking any questions about Dr. Alonso? He is charge of our children’s education. Need I say more? Prompt any questions from you?

The State of Maryland, professes to have the highest rate of college graduates, is the “Hub” for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math, yet, the majority of Black people, juveniles, are not being educated in this knowledge based society.

John Ruskin said, “Let us reform our schools, and we shall find little reform needed in our prisons.”

Black children in underserved communities need your voice, your outrage, your disgust at this despicable mandate by the leaders of this state. Why are there more Black children in the penal system? Why are there more schools being closed? Where are the schools that are being closed? Why are we tolerating this growth of the Prison Industrial Complex?

I remember when he first started it. Even back then, it attracted mounds of would-be business people, all eager to attend with a hungry look in their eyes, insistent on being present and, more importantly, learning something about this thing we call entrepreneurship.

Eleven years later, Finney is our Jay-Z. Hands-down, few have made the contributions this man has. Few have given of themselves and sacrificed as this young man. And so, we should applaud him for continually electrifying us and stimulating our spirits.

His mentor, Stanley Tucker, is no doubt proud as his mentee incites the greatness in all of us to come to fruition.

Guest Editorial: A Tale of Two Cities

“Baltimore is a violent city” exclaims former Baltimore Police Chief Ed Norris. I cough loudly as some patrons at the Red Maple night club turn to locate who’s making the noise. Some 40 patrons are in good spirits at the first anniversary of Investigative Voices website (www.investigativevoices.com).

The site built by Regina Holmes and Steve Janus, former reporters for the Baltimore Examiner, has proven its muscle. They have broken stories and stayed on the case as it relates to crime and corruption in Baltimore.

But isn’t this city more than crime and corruption? Investigative Voices has tapped into the city angst and the suburban angst of Baltimore. We all knew it was there, they just gave voice to what we all knew.

“Yea, I agree Baltimore is a violent city, but I believe you should turn a negative into a positive,” says former Mayor Shelia Dixon.

It was a great experience to be able to talk to the man who is going to play a big part in running the city I live in face to face. On this day, when we bow our heads and hearts in the memory of one of the greatest human beings that ever lived, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, may we use some of the breadth of his greatness in our hearts and minds, realizing those great words of his that “We have nothing to fear but fear.”

So let us be strong.

We are not here to play, to dream, to drift.

We have hard work to do, loads to lift.

Shun not the struggle that is God's gift.

Be strong. It matters not how deep entrenched the wrong.

Nor how hard the battle goes, nor the night how long.

Faint not, fight on.

Tomorrow will come the dawn.

I can say without a doubt, the WLB inspired me to play a more active role in the legislative process. I am learning about issues that affect my community and am researching the backgrounds of “key players.” I want in. I refuse to sit back and play a passive role in this drama called life.

Information is power. Therefore, black, white, men, women - let’s bond together to be the voice of change - the voice of a brighter future filled with hope, promise and limitless possibilities.

TGR: What is the Future of City Hall?

To the City’s credit, many people have worked long and hard to help shovel Baltimore out of the Blizzard of the Century. At the same time, many citizens share a frustration beyond recompense. Many people I’ve talked to feel a certain insensitivity coming out of City Hall.

I’m curious to know how all this will play out – especially given that this is a statewide election year where there are still rumblings of a Wayne Curry (D) and Robert Ehrlich (R) challenge against incumbent Gov. Martin O’Malley. I’m particularly wondering how the new Baltimore City Council President, Bernard “Jack” Young, and the new Mayor, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, will get along.

I just wanted to take a minute - in the midst of all of this snow - to thank you, the reader/visitor - for visiting our website, www.bmorenews.com. Last month, January, was record-breaking with over 871,000 hits and some 29,000 unique visitors. For us, this is incredibly worthy of celebration.

You come from - on average - some 80 different countries around the world. Hence - merci, gracias, kamsameeda - it all means 'Thank you.'

I am reporting to you from Prince George's County, the richest black jurisdiction in the country, which seems so appropo - considering that this is Black History Month.

For me, to grow BMORENEWS.com in Baltimore and expand to the District of Columbia and Prince George's County is simply a dream come true. After all, we view ourselves as "the little engine that could".

In the beginning, few understood - let alone believed - in our mission: to educate, inform, and inspire. So many times, I heard doubters louder than supporters. However, we stayed focused on the light. And so we shall remain.

Today, some say we are a force with which to be reckoned. Our forte is black business and black politics. In short, we try and keep it real. If a politician is not serving the black community, we make it known. If a black business is doing something worthy, like Visionary Marketing Group's big Minority Business Summit next Thursday and Friday, we celebrate it. Additionally, we believe that ex-offenders, housing, and health care are of the highest of priorities.

This will always be our focus, no doubt.
