COMMENTARY: Greetings from Free Fall Baltimore Cultural Arts Community, New Friends , Family & Associates
By Charles Reese
(BALTIMORE - October 6, 2012) - On Monday, the encore presentation for the James Baldwin Literary Performance & Book Signing Salon@Studio KAFI was an amazing journey. Good conversation, good food, good music (and CD give aways for the musical, Nativity) and an excellent reading/performance coupled with some rare video footage from the critically acclaimed Off-Broadway production made this a wonderful Free Fall Baltimore program in the Station North Arts District.
With that being said, I want to personally thank the Baltimore community for your kindness and generosity.
Beginning with Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake kick-off for Free Fall Baltimore at City Hall (where I hula hooped) - to the opening night at CenterStage with Artistic Director, Kwame Kwei Armah (I got to be the first to stroll into theatre on the red carpet for the 50th anniversary kick off season) - to spending quality time with James Baldwin's sister & Baltimore resident, Paula Baldwin Whaley at her Oneeki Gallery in Station North Arts District -to being a featured guest artist from Los Angeles with the Free Fall program series via The James Baldwin Performance Book Salon@ Studio KAFI along with Baltimore's Radio Personality, Anthony McCarthy (WEAA 88.9 FM Radio), and coupled with sharing creative energy with author, film maker, painter and Baltimore resident, Pierre Bennu at the Baltimore Book Festival.....it has simply been an amazing and enjoyable journey of art and culture in the city of Baltimore.
A special thanks and shout out to Dr. Martina P. Callum, Kafi D' Ambrosi, Kevin Brown, Karla"Teddie" Lewis and Robert Blount for sharing your time and showing me that amazing Baltimore hospitality. Priceless.
I am available for bookings for Black History Month 2013 and beyond. I look forward to cultivating our newly found cultural relationship in the city of Baltimore via artist residencies, lectures, workshops and consultancies. And so it is. Wishing you all the best. Until we talk, let it be easy.

Amongst the members of Congress, historians, popular personalities and national press, the descendants of Frederick Douglass will be in attendance during the unveiling ceremony. Nettie Washington Douglass is the Abolitionist’s great great granddaughter as well as the great granddaughter of Tuskegee University Founder and renown educator, Booker T. Washington. She is Chairwoman of Frederick Douglass Family Initiatives (FDFI), an Atlanta-based, non-profit organization dedicated to ending the many forms of slavery that still survive in the world today.
“We are so proud that the Congress of the United States has chosen to honor Frederick Douglass in this way,” said Ms. Douglass. “We especially want to thank Representative Eleanor Holmes Norton of the District of Columbia for her outstanding work on making it a reality.”
