(BALTIMORE - July 23, 2012) - On July 17th, 2012, a group of 20 hardy spirits gathered in front of Baltimore's City Hall in the heat of the evening to remember and celebrate life. The crowd gathered to commemorate the lives of LGBT folk who had been violently killed. Foremost on the minds of attendees were DeSean Bowman and Anthony "Tyra" Trent.

DeSean was murdered in June 2012 in East Baltimore. The young Black gay man was gunned down at a gas station trying to protect a friend from unwanted advances from a hostile suitor. Anthony "Tyra" Trent was a Black transgender woman murdered in February 2011. Her body was found in a vacant building in Baltimore City.

The vigil was sponsored by the Baltimore Guardian Angels, the Remember Me Project and Baltimore Black Pride. Krush Kent, founder of the Remember Me Project and a Guardian Angel, believes that this vigil sheds light on an issue the media rarely covers. "The Baltimore Guardian Angels/Remember Me and Baltimore Black Pride organized the LGBT vigil because the media does not profile the harassment, murders, and injustice within the lgbt community," said the activist. She continued,"I hope that the vigil opened the eyes of the community to the fact that we are all human and as a human, everyone deserves the right to enjoy the fruits of their neighborhoods without being harassed and murdered because of who they are." Krush and the Guardian Angels plan to continue to work with LGBT leaders and organizations to increase awareness of violence against LGBT people.
