Op/Ed: No Recession at Baltimore Institution - The Prime Rib

The Prime Rib

The Prime Rib had one of the best year's in its 44 year history.

(BALTIMORE - October 15, 2009) - When the economy is challenging, people choose their dining options carefully.  They only want a sure thing.  And for 44 years, the surest sure thing has been Baltimore's Prime Rib.  The Prime Rib opened in 1965, the year LBJ proclaimed "The Great Society," the Odd Couple opened on Broadway, Get Smart was on TV, The Rolling Stones recorded "I Can't Get No Satisfaction," Don Shula coached the Colts, and Jim Palmer pitched for the Orioles.

Since that time, The Prime Rib has become a true Baltimore institution - like the Orioles, Baltimore magazine, lacrosse, the National Aquarium, crab cakes, Joseph A. Bank, now the Ravens, the Mt. Vernon Monument, etc.  Like these, The Prime Rib has endured...because it continues to offer the best food in town and perhaps in the country.

The Prime Rib was Esquire magazine’s choice as one of Top 20 Steakhouses in the U.S. and Elizabeth Large, The Baltimore Sun food reviewer gave it her very rare 4 star rating.  The restaurant has a unique combination of old traditions and new:  true prime cuts of meat, fresh-caught fish plus a new casual dress policy - no jackets or ties, and now their year-long extension of restaurant week.

In the best of times, the Prime Rib has been THE place to go for special occasions and a great night out.  And in challenging times, people select their nights out and dining choices carefully.  They want a sure thing, great food, flawless service, all in all, a perfect night.  So they choose the Prime Rib over and over again.  While other venues may have suffered in the economic downturn, the Prime Rib actually did better.  It was and is Baltimore's sure thing, an institution diners count on.

The Prime Rib has been in the same location at Calvert and Chase for its entire 44 years.  In fact, founder Buzz Beler said recently, "Why would we be anyplace else?  Folks have built-in GPS that takes them to the Rib.  We love it here."  He added, "We've got 13 years left on our lease, with a 5 year option to renew.  Baltimore is home."

The Prime Rib was founded in 1965 by famed restaurateur Buzz Beler who later opened restaurants in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.   Over the years, the Prime Rib has earned numerous awards including Best of Baltimore by Baltimore magazine, a Zagat rating as the #1 steakhouse in Baltimore, D.C. and Philadelphia, one of the top five romantic restaurants in the U.S. by Food and Wine magazine, and an Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator magazine.
