DJ L'il Mike: Is LIVE! Entertainment Threatened in Baltimore?

COUNCIL PRESIDENT RAWLINGS-BLAKE TO APPEAR ON WOLB TODAY

By Doni Morton Glover, www.bmorenews.com

(BALTIMORE – March 31, 2009) – There is a well-publicized meeting (Community Work Session) tonight at Morgan State University (6:30 pm to 8:30 pm at Morgan State’s Communications Center, Room 101, 5601 Perring Parkway) regarding the “Live Entertainment –Licensing and Regulation – Hospitality Service – Promotion and Coordination Bill” ushered in by Baltimore City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake.

FMI on the bill, one can visit:

While the goal is help make Baltimore a destination for visitors and to provide an alternative to our neighbors to the north in Philadelphia or to the south in Washington, DC and Prince George’s County, some – black, white and otherwise - are concerned that such legislation will negatively impact business.

The reasons vary.

Last night, I spoke with Prince George’s County Delegates Michael Vaughn and Jay Walker. Walker is leading the charge for a licensing system in the county so that anyone providing LIVE! Entertainment will have to be licensed.

Walker stated that as a part of his campaign for this much-needed piece of legislation, he got buy-in from the community. Specifically, he noted the Peaceaholics, a group that is very interested in preserving Go-go culture in Prince George’s County. The Peaceaholics are an established group in Southeast DC and Prince George’s County and, according to Walker, fully support the effort.

As it relates to Baltimore, most if not all involved understand the need for safe places to party. Also, most seem to understand that some promoters, in particular, are not very responsible.

However, what seems to be the issue is the language in Baltimore’s proposed legislation.

Hence, tonight will be very interesting as a large conglomerate of local promoters plan to be at Morgan to express their concerns.

Today, at 10 am, Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is scheduled to appear in the first half-hour of the weekly radio show we produce on WOLB 1010 AM (Tuesdays from 10 to 11 am) to shed light on this rather interesting development.

Do stay-tuned for ongoing coverage of this proposed legislation to www.bmorenews.com, the news before the news where we uncover the truth.
