TGR: “Bmore4Yele” Benefit Concert Showcased the Best of Baltimore
By Doni Glover, www.bmorenews.com
(BALTIMORE – January 21, 2010) – To say the least, last night was one of those proud moments when one looks upon their people and feels the pride, the girth, and the essence of what it means to be black.
Yes, descendants of a notorious Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, ever reminded of a struggle immeasurable, tossed to and fro by the winds of hatred and the hands of time – only to emerge stronger, better, more distinguished and ever loving such that future generations will one day look back with pride and determination to carry the ball one more time.
Last night, the now generation did the damn thing with pinpoint accuracy. They sang, they danced, and they raised money. More importantly, they raised spirits.
And by God, I pray that somebody in Haiti gets to see this, the videos, and the photos; for there is a balm in Baltimore. Despite the images of “The Wire”, despite the dope on the Avenue, despite the countless unsolved murders of young black men and the others who go marching to courtside every single day … there is yet a healing in our bones.
I am so proud of black people. Despite the reports on health disparities and the mortgage lending crisis, despite the ridicule upon our beloved President Barack Obama and how poorly Democrats react to Republicans, despite the trivial nuances of an otherwise clouded mass media – I know that there is something incredibly special about black people in America. And if you were there last night, you might feel the same way, too!
Great job, Catalina Byrd and James Collins of Fertile Ground. You and your crew represented to the nth degree. And the masses are ever so grateful. Ashe!
