TGR: DAYLIGHT: After the Storm

How did you manage during the storm? Did you lose your mind? Or did you revert to those basic lessons taught by your momma or papa?

Did you read the Bible, the Torah or the Q’uran?

Did you take solace in the blessings that God has granted?

Did you find peace in the notion that ‘this too shall pass’?

Now that the Great Baltimore Blizzard of 2010 has passed …

“His eye is on the sparrow, and I know He watches me.”

(BALTIMORE – February 13, 2010) - Prayerfully, we have learned something about ourselves as a result of the Great Baltimore Blizzard of 2010. Prayerfully, we have learned a thing or two about our own character and our own integrity, particularly when it is put up against opposition.

When Hurricane Katrina occurred, a number of thoughts crossed my mind. One was a question: What would we do if it had hit Baltimore? How would we react? Would our county neighbors welcome us? Would the petty arguments cease and would sound logic kick in? Would we forgive those closest to us for otherwise meaningless transgressions that had just occurred?

The Blizzard of 2010 has given me – and many of you – a lot of time to think and re-evaluate things, our situations, comprehend where we are as a human species, and reconsider what we can do in the remaining time we have left to actually make a difference in this world, in our own lives, and the lives of those around us.

We have seen, for instance, first-hand … our character. We now know what we would do, and we now know what others would do when the crap hits the fan. We better realize who our fans are. And we better understand who the haters are.

Interestingly, most anyone can run from a fight. After all, it is easy to be a coward. The question becomes who will stand in there, put the Vaseline on, and rise to the occasion when everything has gone south so as to go and meet the beast on his home turf.

Did you come to better realize how blessed you are, considering that so many people are less fortunate than you – the homeless, the hungry, the destitute?

I know I did. I thanked God for every single blessing I have, including my children and my family, and my friends who love me no matter what. I thanked God for great neighbors who would not see any harm come my way. And I thanked God for lights, and gasoline, and money.

On that note, big-ups to BG&E and Pepco. Thank you very much.

A fan of futuristic movies, I also thanked God for seeing what would happen when everything was shut down. It’s the great ‘what if’ scenario.

I think the greatest blessing of all was coming to find that no matter how bad things get, God is right here with us. He will send help. He will hear our cry. He will provide comfort and relief in the worst possible conditions like no one else. His grace and mercy does endure forever.

I fell further in love with the Lord God Almighty through these torrential times. I came to find deeper solace in my faith. I came to better understand that everybody has a purpose and that as long as that purpose helps somebody, it is of God.

I also came to better appreciate those around me, for better or worse. I came to better understand the frailty of life, how precious it is, and how I ain’t all that bad a person – despite my views and actions at times.

Would love to hear from you. Just don’t talk about my momma.
