TGR: GODSON: Jawon Johnson Scores 3 Touchdowns in Owings Mills' Victory Over Patapsco 47-0
(BALTIMORE - September 30, 2012) - Congratulations to Jawon Johnson on a wonderful day for his Owings Mills High School varsity football team on Friday. He scored three touchdowns. He scored a fourth, but it was called back. The score: Owings Mills 47, Patapsco 0. Jawon, I’m eager to say, is my Godson and best friend to my son. They are two peas in a pod, where Jawon is a year older than Asaan.
All of their lives, they are the closest. Interestingly, their mothers are best friends. And – Jawon’s grandfather and my father (Asaan’s grandfather) were best friends.
As you can imagine, Jawon is indeed dear to me. Without question, his well-being is a top priority in my life. More than that, one of the things I love about him is his mind. His is one of the sharpest young black men I know. The love of his family and friends warms his spirit as he is learning to spread his wings and fly.
His mother, who is like a younger sister, is so very proud of him. Her name is Juanita and I am a witness that she is the best – the absolute best Godmother in the entire world and I thank God for her every single day.
As the text came in yesterday about Jawon’s great day on the field, I couldn’t help but be grateful that she even thought enough to send it. I mean – people have a lot going on. Nonetheless, it was phenomenal news – especially as I pondered how it literally takes an entire village to raise a child. I guess I was grateful she knew I cared and would welcome the great news with a loving heart because he is like my own son. I've never felt more honored.
What’s beautiful to me is that even though we have a lot of irresponsible parents, I am proud to report that you have supposedly grown people out here who are about the business of these children. All though it’s easy to see mothers and fathers who are everywhere except in the lives of their child, you still have people who are grown and who act grown.
Today’s society is not friendly to the black community, in my eyes. Therefore, we have to love ourselves and do for ourselves. That is how it is going to happen … with Super Moms like Juanita – people who ‘get it’: that everybody plays a role in the grooming of our children. That’s how our parents did it. And that’s how our parents’ parents did it before them. We know what we have to do. So, let’s be better about the business of loving these children so that they can fly like they were born to do.
Jawon is a conscientious young black man with his mind on his future. A mother couldn't ask for a more brilliant young man. Mentally, physically, spiritually - he is the entire package. He's got 'the goods'! He is the finest example of what we want our sons to be. And yes, you're dang skippy I'm biased.
Big ups, Jawon! Love you, ‘son sun’!
