TGR: Honoring Sen. Joan Carter Conway
By Doni M. Glover, www.bmorenews.com
(BALTIMORE - July 14, 2012) - I had a chance last night to hang out with the Godmother of Northeast Baltimore. Politically-speaking, she represents “the goods.” Her husband taught me boxing when I was 14, 15 at North and Eutaw: Mr. Tim. They are as about as Baltimore as it gets. I can still see the image of her having issues with the police. She stood up that day not just for herself – but for all of us. Her innate strength and conscientiousness about black people is rare – especially when Democratic clubs are falling by the wayside in the black community.
There was once a time when all parts of the city had their own machine. Boy, how times have changed. And that’s exactly why it is so important to have a State Senator Joan Carter Conway. Hell, State Senator Thomas V. “Mike” Miller knows how important she is to the city and the state. And so does lobbyist Bruce Bereano.
A tactician when it comes to the political game, she is the Chair of Education, Health and Environmental Affairs Committee – a very powerful position. Even more, she clearly understands Frederick Douglass’ statement that “power concedes nothing without a demand.” Hence, she is a fierce competitor and a bona fide leader of black folks here in Baltimore. She is a master at the game and I’m so glad she loves our community.
One thing we share deeply is a love for our lost friend, former Baltimore City Councilman Ken Harris. And we also share a great passion for the advancement of minority business enterprises in the State of Maryland.
All this to say, Congrats, Senator – on a wonderful affair last night. Thank you for having BMORENEWS.com in the house. It is always an honor to see you, a champion for our people!
