TGR: MD Poli10: Gorgeous Prince George’s Gearing Up for an Interesting Year of Politics
Let's get ready to rum-ble!
By Doni Glover, www.bmorenews.com
(BALTIMORE – December 26, 2009) – What’s happening on the political scene in the richest black jurisdiction in the country? Well, 2010 is sure to be full of surprises and incredibly interesting developments for incumbents and challengers alike.
With issues that mirror its Baltimore cousin to the north, the mortgage lending crisis, public education, and county contracts are sure to be among the hot issues discusses.
Starting with Congresswoman Donna Edwards, a recent chat with Delegate Michael Vaughn suggested potential challenges from State’s Attorney Glen Ivey and Delegate Herman Taylor.
While Ivey has been termed out, Taylor does risk his House of Delegates seat. Will Taylor, who put together the largest group of minority businesses ever in Annapolis earlier this year, make for a formidable challenger? Or, will Ivey, who could receive criticism for his tenure as the county’s top lawyer, pose more of a threat? Or, will Edwards, who beat former boss Al Wynn, cruise to the finish line? Inquiring minds wants to know.
As for the new County Exec, Jack Johnson – the current exec – will leave behind a share of controversy. For instance, his handling of the National Harbor project may make for some interesting discussions.
In that race, one Vaughn considers “wide open”, Sheriff Michael Jackson, Rashurn Baker, and Delegate Gerron Levi were the names mentioned. There has been question as to whether or not Ivey is considering this race as well, according to Vaughn. Another name in the race is Councilman Sam Dean.
And, then there is the State’s Attorney’s race. Angela Alsobrooks is a name worth recognizing. Political consultant Ervin Reid suggests this woman has a good chance of winning. He told BMORENEWS that she has the makings of a County Exec even. Mark Spencer, one of the most well-known of the candidates, is also out there. From Baltimore to DC, his is a solid name when it comes to leadership and supporters insist he is the absolute best candidate for the job. Peggy Magee, Joe Wright, and County Councilman Tom Dernoga have also been listed. While Dernoga is Vice Chair of the Council, Magee is the County’s Clerk of the Courts. Wright serves as Assistant State’s Attorney.

TGR: MD Poli10: One Week Until the DC/MD Primary:
Let’s go to Baltimore County – particularly the NW. That would be Woodlawn, Randallstown, Owings Mills, and Pikesville. For the County Exec race, BMORENEWS is of the belief that the Joe Bartenfelder camp philosophy is simply more genuine than that of Kevin Kamenetz. The people we’ve interviewed on the ground in NW Baltimore County have told us repeatedly that Kamenetz didn’t do anything memorable for blacks when his district included the black part of the county, i.e. Liberty Road.
While his radio commercials do the name-dropping maneuver featuring prominent voices from the black community pretty well, we’re simply not buying it. We need more than some election-time attention over the airwaves of Radio One and Heaven 600. Those in the know in NW Baltimore County have told us that they would prefer a down-to-earth Bartenfelder over the charismatic Kamenetz. And this is not because Councilman Bartenfelder sells collard greens on Sundays at The Farmers’ Market (I’ve yet to try them).
He just doesn’t appear to be a man who says something he doesn’t mean. In politics, as with most everything else, character defines an individual.
Further, we have yet to figure out why certain politicos in NW Baltimore County endorsed Kamenetz so early in the process. Typically, endorsements come out in the latter part of the game after some negotiations, agreements, and promises have been made – in good faith.

Two Weeks Out from MD Primary …:
What’s sure to be exciting is any series of debates that are likely to occur. Personally, I’d like to hear some discussion of business opportunities for minorities, ie black folks. I’d also like to hear some good news on the funding of our public schools. And if I had to choose a third priority, it would be health care. Del. Dan Morhaim, M.D. was recently on The Huckabee TV Show and did a stellar job explaining some of the key elements of “ObamaCare”. While we have covered Pres. Barack Obama’s intentions to address major health issues specifically regarding the African American community, I’d simply like to hear more about helping to reduce medical costs to Marylanders – including the cost of prescriptions.
Locally, three races have captivated my imagination this election season: The Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office; the Baltimore County Exec; and the 4th Councilmanic District.
With 15 years under her belt, Baltimore City State’s Attorney Pat Jessamy faces opposition from Defense Attorney Greg Bernstein. Last week, Bernstein’s campaign came under fire for what many, including University of Baltimore Law Professor Larry Gibson, thought was a tasteless piece of negative advertising; one of his ads featured the Dawson Family in East Baltimore where a clip of the Dawson tragedy was used without the family’s permission.

I do not agree with the comments for the Race of State's Attorney. How is Alsobrooks considered, a "name worth recognizing?" Who is she? Where did she come from? the Revenue Authority. I really dont think the unions care about that. Spencer, is "well-known?" Well, yeah he is, by working side by side with Jack Johnson..trust me, that will not help him in the run at all. the unions wont go for that either. I believe Dernoga and Magee are top candidates, something you failed to realize. Tom Dernoga is not the Vice Chair, but the Chair of the council, and is very popular among is district, and across the county. Magee is also very popular and serving in the air force for over 20 years shows some experience. and you have to look at money wise. Alsobrooks, and Spencer are starting from scratch, while Chair Dernoga and Magee have been collecting since forever...I think this article needs to be updated, or stop showing favoritism.
