TGR: Will Leronia Josey Make County History?
(RANDALLSTOWN - March 17, 2010) - More importantly, can she make a difference? Bring an air of rejuvenation to an otherwise sluggish piece of turf?
Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver could have his hands full this election season - that is, if Ms. Josey decides to put her bid in for his seat. I think she can shake things up. While Oliver is the first black to serve on the County Council, a loss to Josey would make her the first black woman to serve on the Baltimore County Council - a crew that consists mostly of white males. Move over, guys!
A black president; a possible black governor; seems only logical to me.
As most readers familiar to my commentaries know, NW Baltimore County is Baltimore's Prince George's County - the richest black jurisdiction in the country.
From Woodlawn to Owings Mills, there some of the most powerful minds reside. However, the giant has been asleep for way too long. So many blacks out here have never even been to a County Council or school board meeting. Something is fundamentally wrong with that!
Don't we want to know where our money goes? How it is spent? Who gets the contracts? Who decides?
Are we totally apathetic about the issues that affect us most - from the inundation of group homes to the lack of big box stores on Liberty Road?
Hello!? Anybody listening?

Guest Editorial: The Illusion of Public Safety vs. Civil Liberties:
Like anyone, I want my son to live in a safe city, but not at the expense of his human rights and civil liberties. Currently, we are working on two cases: one dealing with a disabled man shot by the Baltimore City Police Department, and the second concerning a group of East Baltimore demonstrators attacked by the police. In the first situation, outraged bystanders were warned by officers on the scene to stop acting like, guess what, "animals". Sound familiar?
