RAWLINGS-BLAKE ANNOUNCES TRANSITION COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake enlisted the support of top Baltimore leaders to serve as committee members to assist City government during the transition process.
Rawlings-Blake assembled a team of experts to serve on committees in six key areas: Public Safety and Essential Services; Jobs and Economic Development; Education Reform and Youth Services; Community Development and Neighborhoods; Health and Human Services; and Arts and Culture.

Meanwhile, the first major hurdle that she and the City Council must deal with is the election of a City Council President. While there are rumblings that someone outside the Council – namely Keiffer Mitchell – was being considered, the word at City Hall is that it really boils down to Bernard “Jack” Young, who represents the 12th District, and Bill Cole, who is in the 11th.
While Young has a dozen years on the City Council, and is black, his main opponent, Cole, is in his first term. Cole, who is white, replaced Mitchell. Mitchell relinquished his seat as he aimed for the mayorship.

Baltimore Mayor Designee Stephanie Rawlings-Blake Holds First Press Conference:
“[Pledging] orderly and transparent transition focused on public safety and essential city service,” Rawlings-Blake stated, “During the next 30 days, and beyond, my focus will be on ensuring an orderly, transparent and effective transition of power.” She added, “We will at all times make the decisions necessary to protect our citizens and to continue the delivery of essential services.”

On one hand, the Baltimore City Council has challenged Mayor Sheila Dixon’s budget. They have suggested that the city’s first (black) woman mayor’s cuts could have been done differently – pointing to the closing of some recreation centers as an example of much needed services that are now in jeopardy.
On the other hand, the Mayor responded Friday with a memo that made small of the City Council’s issues and, further, seemed to castigate the Council in a minimal light as being ill-informed.
