MBE Firm Secures Multi-million Dollar Contract with City of Baltimore
(BALTIMORE – Dec. 6) – In order to be successful – especially in business, one must be properly prepared, well-disciplined, and constantly about the business of improvement. Not many master these traits. Hence, there are few at the top.
Just opposite the former Memorial Stadium, Alexis Coates is adamantly on his post at dEVNIX’s third floor suite in the former Eastern High School on 33rd Street.
dEVNIX, of which Coates is the CEO, has gone from an IT (information technology) training and maintenance start-up to an even more focused data backup and security firm. In fact, if there was ever a time in the world of business – despite race, class, creed, religion, nationality – where preparation, discipline and persistence all meet together, it would star dEVNIX.
So, what are all the accolades for? Here’s the unofficial memo:
On Wednesday, November 15, 2006 at the City’s Board of Estimates meeting, dEVNIX Data Management continued to bridge the technological divide by securing a lucrative contract with Baltimore City. Sources indicate that dEVNIX will provide IT services for several agencies throughout the City’s infrastructure. The City Wide Network and System Support bid was awarded to Digicon Corporation, dEVNIX, Applied Technology Services (ATS), and Early Morning Software (EMS). The award was announced and approved.
So, what did Coates, the ever-charismatic 6 foot 3 and always dapper young exec have to say about the recent award?
In an exclusive interview with BMORENEWS.com, Coates stated, “Team dEVNIX has strategically partnered with Digicon and EMS so as to provide the City of Baltimore with optimum information assurance solutions.”
Well aware of the responsibilities that come with the deal, Coates said, “It is the goal of dEVNIX to assure the City of Baltimore that it’s chosen IT provider will deliver on-time solutions along with a complete array of IT services.”
No stranger to politics, Coates knows all too well the significance of this year’s election. Even more, he is very knowledgeable about the need for political leaders to push the envelope for small and minority businesses.
With this in mind, Coates said, “It is clear to see that the city is making a solid attempt to help build healthy minority businesses.”
Coates credits Mayor/Governor-elect Martin O’Malley and other City officials with having continued the push to increase minority business participation on all levels.
He added, “dEVNIX looks forward to continuing to build relationships with entities such as the City of Baltimore.”
Also on dEVNIX’s Executive Team are Jevon Spivey, the CTO, and Brett McAlily, Esquire, the President and COO.
HISTORY
Prior to joining dEVNIX, Alexis Coates had a distinguished career in academia with Baltimore County Community College – Catonsville (BCCC - Catonsville) where he taught an assortment of software courses, including Microsoft, Oracle, project management, database, and System Development Cycle classes.
Then, some way – some how - he and Spivey started Telracom Technology. Coates served as the CEO. Talrecom ultimately came to provide computer training and system design for organizations and entities such as Comcast Cable, the State of Maryland, Hopkins Transportation, and other private firms throughout Maryland. Coates’ tenure at Talrecom focused specifically on software development and design. Further, he was responsible for sales and support of Talrecom’s technology products and services.
When asked his intentions, he replied, “Our goal was and is to help people. We have always aimed to give back to society, and that’s what we have done – all the way to KatrinaBaltimore.com.
Troubled by the sight of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on national television, Coates led an effort with BMORENEWS.com to provide an on-line resource for Katrina victims who found their way to Maryland.
He said this was his way of dealing with the horrific tragedy that consumed millions of people around the world.
Mind you, Coates is no pushover hungry for a hard-luck story. He said he knows all too well the taste of defeat and instead savors the flavor of victory. He said that being in business is all about staying on the grind, ever improving one’s skills, ever staying on-task – regardless of distractions.
The consummate entrepreneur, Coates enters his firm’s suite each day he says with renewed enthusiasm, an innate desire to be the Tiger Woods of IT, the Jay Z of the computer world, perpetually about the business of giving back to local schools, and, if nothing else, lending a kind and encouraging word to a fellow entrepreneur like: “You got to stay on the grind.”
Raised near Park Circle, Coates comes from truly modest beginnings. And, let him tell the story, he has come a long way since the days he and now-City Councilman Kenneth N. Harris, Sr. would stroll to the now-defunct Giovanchi’s, a West Baltimore club loved by teenagers back in the late seventies/early eighties.
Since then, Coates said he has yearned to be his own boss. And Spivey agreed.
“We decided we didn’t want to work for someone else,” he said. “We wanted to build a national conglomerate for information technology.”
And so, he fondly recalls, his first client would be Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Homes, founded by a young entrepreneur who, along with his wife and business partner would go on to become Baltimore’s most dynamic young funeral director in years. And, with dEVNIX doing the IT backup, he will quite likely stay atop his industry for a long time to come. After all, when one uses good old-fashioned customer service – combined with the latest technology, success is damn near guaranteed.
