Herbert Buchanan Named New CEO of Howard University Hospital
(WASHINGTON - Sept. 27, 2012) – Today, Herbert C. Buchanan Jr. was named the Chief Executive Officer of Howard University Hospital (HUH). The appointment is effective Oct. 1.
Mr. Buchanan will direct the day-to-day activities of the hospital, including community relations, financial management, marketing, information technology and clinical and administrative operations.
“Mr. Buchanan has a proven track record of optimizing operations for complex health care systems as well as dedicated service to the community,” said Provost and Chief Academic Officer Wayne Frederick, M.D., MBA. “We sought a seasoned leader who can advance our mission as an academic medical center and navigate a changing health care landscape."
Buchanan is joining HUH after spending nearly seven years as the Chief Operating Officer at the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) in Baltimore, MD. UMMC is the academic medical center and flagship hospital in the University of Maryland Medical System.
He succeeds Larry Warren, the top executive at HUH since 2007. Warren will step down at the end of September.
As the COO, Mr. Buchanan had responsibility for operations and activities that ranged from clinical support and support operations, to major construction, supply chain and business diversity, corporate-wide customer service initiatives and process improvement.
Prior to assuming this role, Mr. Buchanan was the Vice President of Operations at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago and served in a similar capacity at Huntsville Hospital in Alabama. His background also includes health care consulting in facilities, operations and strategic planning.
Mr. Buchanan's track record includes leading strategic initiatives, team effectiveness, professional and leadership development, as well as process innovation and lean initiatives. He has had success in the areas of clinical and operational excellence as well as financial health.
Additionally, he has worked extensively in academic and community settings, serving as the vice chairman of Family and Children's Services of Central Maryland, a member of the Baltimore mayor's Workforce Investment Board and a preceptor to graduate fellows. In addition, Mr. Buchanan served on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University and Oakwood University in their health care administration programs.
A native of Washington, D.C., Buchanan’s educational background includes an MBA with a concentration in health care from Northwestern University and graduate and undergraduate mechanical engineering degrees from University of Michigan and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, respectively.
