Next HARAMBEE D.C. Expected to Help Empower Local Entrepreneurs: “I Want to be a Millionaire!”

(BALTIMORE – September 12, 2008) – Since 2002, BMORENEWS’ founder and publisher Doni Glover has been producing the HARAMBEE Dinner Club with the expressed purpose of providing attendees the opportunity to “break bread and network”.
Tuesday’s HARAMBEE D.C. at Velleggia’s (829 East Pratt Street) from 6 to 8 pm is going to be no different.
"Essentially, it is time for the entrepreneur to dig deep inside and tighten his or her belt, and find innovative ways to make business happen. I believe that God hasn’t brought us this far to leave us, so we’ve just got to use what’s already at our disposal in order to create opportunities for ourselves. After all, and I say this time and time again on our radio show, we have $45 billion in annual disposable income between Baltimore and DC. No business worth its salt ought to have to close the doors for lack of business. Period."
”We’re just continuing what we’ve always done,” said Glover. “We’re continuing to bring dynamic personalities to the forefront so as to keep inspiring entrepreneurs out here to stay in the game – no matter how difficult it is.”
While August’s theme was “Surviving Trying Times”, the theme for September is “I Want to be a Millionaire.”
Glover said that this latest series is predicated on a slumping economy “where increasingly more business owners are finding it necessary to close their doors.”

Speakers for Tuesday’s HARAMBEE include Baltimore City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Greater Baltimore Committee President and CEO Don Fry, Baltimore City Community College President Dr. Carolan Williams, Commercial Interiors’ Marty Glaze, Forest City-East Baltimore Partnership’s Andrea Garris, NABJ Regional Director Charles Robinson, Baltimore Polytechnic Principal Dr. Barney Wilson, Dr. Stephanie Reid of Reid Stress Management, and Joan Marshall of the College Savings Plan of Maryland.
The M.C. for the evening is Jewel West - a stylist, beauty consultant and owner of The Jewel Salon for the past 17 years.
“We wanted to bring together a collection of people who are all at the top of their games,” Glover said. “The best way to be successful is to be around people who are successful. Somewhere in the midst of all of that synergy, we pray, await some answers and solutions for the entrepreneurs in attendance. Somewhere in all of this, there will be something said that somebody needs to hear so as to improve upon what they are already doing. And for me, personally, that’s the hit!”
This is an RSVP ONLY event. Please reserve your space by contacting Phenomenal Events at 1.443.223.8759. Tickets are $17 for RSVPs, and includes a wonderful dinner menu by the Chef at Velleggia’s.

TGR: Will Leronia Josey Make County History?:
Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver could have his hands full this election season - that is, if Ms. Josey decides to put her bid in for his seat. While Oliver is the first black to serve on the County Council, a loss to Josey would make her the first black woman to serve on the Baltimore County Council - a crew that consists mostly of white males. Move over, guys!
A black president; a possible black governor; seems only logical to me.

Jim Morrison said that ‘whoever controls the media controls the mind!’ Yet today’s media has seemed to have shifted it’s interest from responsible investigative reporting to a more instant on-demand format of sound bytes and hybrid headlines.
From the advent of social media tools such as YouTube and Facebook to the reduction in senior staff and publications of print media, the lack of real journalism has ceased to exist. However who is truly to be blamed, the reporters’ who spew the untruth without proper fact checks or the consumers of such information who propagate this gossip as factual?

Despite all that is messed up, I am taken back to grandma’s favorite hymn, #325, in the good ol’ Baptist Hymnal: “We’ll understand it better bye and bye.” I’m taken back to the praying man’s visit every Monday at 4 pm and the long, long prayers he would utter. I think of drinking tea and eating Graham crackers with grandpop before grandma got home.
Friends, it is easy to focus on the negative. It is easy to throw the towel in on life. It is easy to concede, to give up, to quit. I don’t know about you, but I refuse to do so. I just can’t. I won’t. There is a certain sense of entitlement of expanded territory that I simply demand of myself and those around me, as ordained by God. I say, mediocrity is for the lame. This kid here expects the very best that God has to offer. Come hell or high water, I’ll just have to take the hits; but progress, I insist, is imminent.
