October ’08 HARAMBEE Takes It Up A Notch
Special Thanks to Wayne Frazier, Attorney Granville Templeton, and Attorney Paul Gardner
(BALTIMORE – October 2, 2008) – The HARAMBEE Dinner Club, founded in the fall of 2002, has consistently produced business-networking events at Maryland and DC venues over the past 6 years. From The Gallery on East-West Highway in Downtown Silver Spring to The Stonefish Grill in Prince George’s County to BWI Airport to a variety of establishments in Baltimore City and County – the HARAMBEE (Swahili for “all pull together”) events are one-of-a-kind affairs featuring everybody from the governor to Maryland members of Congress.
“All we do is bring the elected officials to the people – or vice versa,” he stated. “A lot of times, elected officials can be viewed as unapproachable. In actuality, just like our June HARAMBEE with Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown revealed, one will find that politicians are people, too. All we do is help bridge the gap. Right now, we have a heap of issues to cover: From slots to the American economic crisis to the state of MBE’s to the Patriot Act, there are a litany of items that many Americans find difficult to understand. Even more, as many of our attendees are business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs, we strive to provide access and understanding.”
And on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 from 6 to 8 pm at Velleggia’s Italian Seafood Restaurant – things will be no different.
According to the club’s founder, BMORENEWS.com publisher Doni Glover, “We are extremely proud to present yet another HARAMBEE featuring some of the most accomplished people out there.”
He added, “Attendees to this event will not be disappointed as we bring together business professionals, entrepreneurs, and individuals from the political realm to discuss my favorite topic – political economy. And that has everything to do with the close inter-relationship of politics and economics. You see, politics determines who gets what, when, and where. And economics is the allocation of scarce resources. So, together, these are two very powerfully interdependent disciplines that impact the average person every day.”
All one has to do is turn on the news and political economy is everywhere, he noted. Glover, who has served for about 7 years as a political analyst for WBAL TV 11 (NBC) and who is a finalist for the 2008 Greater Baltimore Committee’s President’s Award for Minority Business Advocacy, is both a business owner and a serious politico in the State of Maryland. His prognostications have come true time after time, especially in some of the hottest contested races in the Maryland-DC region.

Hence, Glover announced on Tuesday’s radio show (WOLB 1010 AM from 10 to 11 am) that the October 14th event will feature Maryland Attorney General Doug Gansler and former State Senator Clarence Mitchell, IV. With Attorney Craig Thompson (also a WEAA radio personality) emceeing the event, other attendees include LIVE Baltimore’s Anna Custer, M-PALM’s Karen Shannon, Wayne Frazier (Maryland-Washington Minority Contractors Association President), Bank of America’s Teddy Coates, stockbroker Darric Boyd, and former NFL standout Keion Carpenter.
Dinner is $20 and includes a 4-course meal. To RSVP, please call Phenomenal Events at 1.443.223.8759 or email contact@phenomenal-events.com.
Sponsors of this event include the Maryland-Washington Minority Contractors Association, Granville Templeton Law, Attorney Paul Gardner, Chesapeake Urology, and Bennett & Albright, P.A.

TGR: Will Leronia Josey Make County History?:
Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver could have his hands full this election season - that is, if Ms. Josey decides to put her bid in for his seat. While Oliver is the first black to serve on the County Council, a loss to Josey would make her the first black woman to serve on the Baltimore County Council - a crew that consists mostly of white males. Move over, guys!
A black president; a possible black governor; seems only logical to me.

Jim Morrison said that ‘whoever controls the media controls the mind!’ Yet today’s media has seemed to have shifted it’s interest from responsible investigative reporting to a more instant on-demand format of sound bytes and hybrid headlines.
From the advent of social media tools such as YouTube and Facebook to the reduction in senior staff and publications of print media, the lack of real journalism has ceased to exist. However who is truly to be blamed, the reporters’ who spew the untruth without proper fact checks or the consumers of such information who propagate this gossip as factual?

Despite all that is messed up, I am taken back to grandma’s favorite hymn, #325, in the good ol’ Baptist Hymnal: “We’ll understand it better bye and bye.” I’m taken back to the praying man’s visit every Monday at 4 pm and the long, long prayers he would utter. I think of drinking tea and eating Graham crackers with grandpop before grandma got home.
Friends, it is easy to focus on the negative. It is easy to throw the towel in on life. It is easy to concede, to give up, to quit. I don’t know about you, but I refuse to do so. I just can’t. I won’t. There is a certain sense of entitlement of expanded territory that I simply demand of myself and those around me, as ordained by God. I say, mediocrity is for the lame. This kid here expects the very best that God has to offer. Come hell or high water, I’ll just have to take the hits; but progress, I insist, is imminent.
