Baltimore History: Implosion of Murphy Homes :: July 3, 1999
By BMORENEWS Staff
(BALTIMORE - August 7, 2012) - This marked an end of an era as the George B. Murphy Homes public housing complex on the west side was imploded. Daniel P. Henson, III was Housing Commissioner.
He recently shared with BMORENEWS: "Of the 4 family high-rise developments in Baltimore, all planned as a part of the 'Negro Housing Plan' of 1945, Murphy was in relatively good physical condition by 1994 when it was assessed as a part of the HOPE VI planning process. It's plumbing, electrical and mechanical systems were planned and built to minimal standards in 1957, however and were shot. And, the density, people stacked on top of each other, made it a lousy place to raise children for the future. I know of many great people who came out of Murphy in spite of the systemic and structural problems."
