BALTIMORE TALK SHOW HOST TO BEGIN HUNGER STRIKE TO RAISE $50,000 TO SUPPORT DRUG RECOVERY PROGRAM
McCarthy to announce awareness campaign on his WEAA talk show
(BALTIMORE - November 14, 2008) - Anthony McCarthy, the host of The Anthony McCarthy Show on public radio WEAA and a political analyst and commentator, will announce on his show today at 5:00 p.m. that he will deny his body food and only drink water until the public helps him raise $50,000 to support I Can't We Can, a community based drug recovery program located in Park Heights.
McCarthy is taking this drastic step because he believes that government officials, church leaders and the general public has turned their backs on small non-profits that are providing critical services to the poor and minorities, meanwhile taking full advantage of the work being done by these organizations.
"Over the last ten years I Can't We Can has taken anyone in who wants to change their lives and conquer their addictions. They have turned no one away. These are the people who would otherwise be breaking into cars and homes and committing horrible crimes to feed their addictions to crack, heroin, alcohol and every other illegal substance," said McCarthy.
"Now the organization is barely able to exist because contributions have dried up and it appears that many government decision makers have simply forgotten why this organization exists. Can you imagine what would happen to these drug addicts if I Can't We Can were forced to close their doors like HERO and other small groups?" added McCarthy
McCarthy has set a goal of raising $50,000 to help I Can't We Can serve their poor and mostly minority clients and will spend the coming days reaching out to corporate, political, religious and community leaders to ask for contributions and help.
"Really, I don't know if anyone will even care that I am doing this, but I am going to try to raise this money and more importantly, make people aware of what will happen to Baltimore if we keep allowing groups like I Can't We Can to struggle," said McCarthy.
Contributions can be made by contacting I Can't We Can at 410.728.4491.

I didn’t realize until I received many emails after the first posting that a person being passionate about the arts and politics in equal measure was such a rarity. In fact, I thought it common knowledge that the two were connected indefinitely. I thought it appropriate that this be my post for the year because it will set the platform for the articles that will follow in weeks to come. I was invited to write here because I am an Independent, as I explained before. I am an Independent because of my understanding of America and its purpose. The arts and philosophy have helped to shape those ideas for me just as they did our founding fathers. Read in Full >>
TGR: BET: "Big Ass Chain"? Enough Is Enough!:
BET, in my best estimation, is a profit-driven entity like any other business. However, black America deserves so much more. BET depicts black people as savages with animalistic and materialistic ambitions. BET, from my perspective, condones drug dealing and orgies, popping bottles and partying, and avoids the true beauty of the black experience in America. Somewhere along the line, some industry executives have told our young and beautiful artists that in order to make money, they have to be murderous thugs, whores and prostitutes.
