Prof. Larry Gibson

(BALTIMORE - September 19, 2012) - Well-known political consultant and educator Larry S. Gibson will be the featured speaker at Baltimore City Community College's celebration of Constitution Day, Tuesday, Sept. 25 at noon in Gaare Auditorium of the Liberty Campus Nursing Building, 2901 Liberty Heights Ave.

Gibson will discuss his new book, "Young Thurgood: The Making of a Supreme Court Justice," the first in-depth examination of the formative years of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. The biography examines how Marshall's personality, priorities and work habits were shaped by people and events in Maryland prior to his joining the staff of the NAACP in 1936. The book contains much information about Baltimore and Maryland during the 1920s and 1930s.

Gibson grew up in Baltimore and earned his high school diploma from Baltimore City College, where he was the first African American class officer. He attended Howard University in Washington, D.C. and earned his law degree from Columbia University in 1967. In 1972, he became the first African American law professor at the University of Virginia. Two years later, he accepted a faculty position at the University of Maryland School of Law, where he continues to teach Evidence, Civil Procedure, Race and the Law, and Election Law.

The professor is best known as a successful political consultant who has directed local, state and national political campaigns since 1968. Mr. Gibson was campaign manager for the Hon. Kurt L. Schmoke's successful elections as mayor of Baltimore City in 1987, 1991 and 1995. He was Maryland state campaign chairman for the Clinton-Gore presidential campaign in 1992.
