Bethel A.M.E. Church supports the Great Prostate Cancer Challenge
(BALTIMORE - June 16, 2008) - Bethel A.M.E.'s pastor, Rev. Dr. Frank Madison Reid, has been advocating for me in his church to get screened for prostate cancer for some time now.
With Father's Day 2008 over, he nonetheless continues this push, Hence, Bethel is teaming up with Chesapeake Urology Associates to provide FREE prostate cancer screenings right after services on Sunday, August 10, 2008. Chesapeake Urology physicians will be present to conduct the screenings.
Chesapeake Urology began this major push last year and has dubbed their efforts "The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge."
Why? In 2008, more than 186,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. More than 28,000 will die from the disease. African American men are 60% more likely than the rest of the population to develop prostate cancer. The good news is, early detection helps one beat the odds against prostate cancer.
The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge is also bringing Patti LaBelle to Baltimore for a special concert on Saturday, September 6, 2008, 7:30 p.m., at Pier Six Pavilion.*
And, on Sunday, September 14, 2008, all are invited to take part in The Great Prostate Cancer Challenge in Baltimore. Based on the overwhelming success of 2007’s inaugural event, this 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk is back—and better than ever! Proceeds will benefit the American Urological Association Foundation. Last year more than 1,200 participants took to the campus of St. Joseph Medical Center to raise upwards of $125,000. A total of 88 men took advantage of free screenings; nine of whom tested positive for cancer.
