Greater Baltimore Urban League Hosted Annual Gala focusing on "State of Black Baltimore"
(BALTIMORE - May 8, 2008) - The challenges in the City of Baltimore, a majority black jurisdiction in Maryland, are incredible: health disparities; educational underdevelopment; the mortgage lending crisis; and the list goes on and on.
Nonetheless, the Greater Baltimore Urban League (GBUL), under the guise and direction of CEO J. Howard Henderson and Chair of the Board Raymond V. Haysbert, Sr. is intent on making a positive difference and helping to battle the monster, no matter how big it is.
Today, a barrage of speakers and thinkers came to the forefront at the GBUL's Annual Gala at The Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel to discuss these issues and to articulate solutions.
Everyone from Essence Magazine's Susan Taylor to school CEO Andres Alonso made it their business to educate and inspire attendees to become a part of the solution.

Meeting Morehouse College President Franklin Was An Inspirational Experience:
He, in fact, is a reminder – with all due respect to all of the black schools out there – why I first chose – at the urging of my high school counselors - to attend Morehouse. It was a vivid reminder of the three semesters I was blessed to be at – in my mind – the greatest institution on the planet with some of the greatest minds I have ever known. As we gain perspective and reaffirm our faith, obstacles in our path start to seem less obstructive and more instructive. Instead of complaining about our empty gas tanks, we begin to appreciate the benefits of walking, biking or taking the bus to work.
