Highlandtown: All Ages ART CART DERBY & ART BY THE PINT

cart

(BALTIMORE - September 27, 2912) - On Saturday, October 6 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., the 2nd Annual Highlandtown Art Cart Derby and Art By The Pint exhibition will take place at the intersection of Conkling and Gough Streets in Highlandtown. The two events combine art and family-friendly fun into a unique celebration of community and creativity.

Shannon Cassidy, who has owned The Laughing Pint for six years, will set up an exhibit with over 50 pieces of art from the local artists who have shown their work in her establishment. Cassidy features one artist per month and passes on 100% of the proceeds from any art sales to the artist themselves. She will curate the Art By The Pint show with help from local artist Kini Collins. Other artists featured in the show include Ron Russell, Lotta Olen, Jim Burger, Milli Hoffman and Laura Vernon-Russell, among others. The exhibit will also feature works from neighborhood youths and artists who will have shows at The Laughing Pint at the end of 2012 and into 2013.

The Laughing Pint is located at the corner of Conkling and Gough Streets and will serve as the starting line for the Highlandtown Art Cart Derby. The Art Cart Derby will feature team built carts racing down Gough Street for an all ages, family friendly competition. This year's Art Cart Derby is expected to have more than 12 carts from a variety of groups including Banner Neighborhoods, Communities for All Ages, and the Highlandtown Arts & Entertainment District, among others. Each cart must be gravity-powered with working brake and steering capabilities. Teams are encouraged to pick a theme, adopt team cheers to rally support for their drivers and wear costumes. Prizes will be awarded for Fastest Cart, Coolest Cart Concept, Youngest-Oldest Art Cart Team and Fan Favorite. Teams will line up their carts at 2 p.m. and racing will begin at 3 p.m.

For more information about entering the Art Cart Derby or to download the registration form, visit southeastcdc.org and click on the Art Cart Derby link or contact Leanna Wetmore at 410-585-8810 or leanna@bannerneighborhoods.org. The deadline for entering the race is October 1, 2012. In addition to the art exhibition and derby, the event will include live performances by Super Art Fight and talented local youth as well as a kids art making workshop.

The All Ages Art Cart Derby and Art By The Pint are presented by Communities For All Ages (CFAA) and The Laughing Pint. CFAA is an intergenerational initiative of the Southeast Community Development Corporation, Banner Neighborhoods, and the Creative Alliance at the Patterson, and sponsored by the Baltimore Community Foundation. The event is sponsored by MECU.
