NAACP CALLS ON FAITH LEADERS TO DELIVER URGENT MESSAGE TO THE COMMUNITY ...
"STOP THE KILLING & END THE VIOLENCE"
(BALTIMORE - July 28, 2009) - The Baltimore City Branch NAACP during a radio show on WOLB 1010 AM tomorrow, at approximately 8 am, will call upon all faith based leaders to immediately begin delivering messages of ‘Stop the Killing and End the Violence’ starting Tuesday and through Sunday morning worship.
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “…Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.”
"We are presently in a crisis as it relates to violence and homicides here in Baltimore City,” states NAACP Baltimore City Branch President Dr. Marvin Cheatham.
Cheatham continued to quote King: “Cowardice asks the question - is it safe? Expediency asks the question - is it politic? Vanity asks the question - is it popular? But conscience asks the question - is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular; but one must take it because it is right.”
He added, "The time has come for us to call upon God’s messengers and servants to rise up and bring our community back into sanity because to have 19 shootings in 6 hours which is unimaginable. Better yet, it is nothing short of war in our own community. We must call upon God and God’s people to turn this tragic –life-threatening and life-taking period around."
Citizens are asked to immediately call their faith leaders and ask that this message of "Stop the Killing – End the Violence" begin immediately. Also, the NAACP is asking everyone to begin at home because the perpetrators of crime and violence are members of our own family and community.
This call for action by ministers will be reiterated at the NAACP Baltimore City Branch General Membership Meeting, Tuesday, July 28, 2009 – 6:00 p.m. – Union Baptist Church – 1219 Druid Hill Avenue – Baltimore , Maryland 21217 . For more information, contact President Dr. Cheatham at 410.669.8683. Meeting is free and open to the public.
