Guest Editorial: Paul Laurence Dunbar Community High School Cuts Ribbon on New Field, 10.26.12
By Charles Robinson
(BALTIMORE - October 27, 2012) - There are certain institutions in Bmore that have strived for excellence in the face of overwhelming odds. Dunbar H.S. is one. It's named for the famed Black Poet. The school sits in the shadows of Johns Hopkins University and the Labtrobe Housing Projects. It ain't pretty.
For 4 years the schools football team practiced, but never played a home game on the "Sugar" Cain Field. That changed yesterday. With a sizable donation from Under Armour, the school got a new turf, scoreboard, and a computer lab - thanks to its owner, Kevin Plank.
It's days like this that makes you proud to be from Bmore. FYI, the reigning State Champs beat Carver for Homecoming. Hats off to my friends who remind me often that they are Poets.

We have to understand what the local Council does, what the state assembly does, and what is done in Congress. We also have to understand the legislation they write and who it impacts. Classic example: prisons. Somebody is voting for more and more prisons. My issue is that too many people who look just like me keep filling these cells. Currently, America has the Gold! It incarcerates 25% of the world's inmates, 40% who are black and male ... like me.

CHICAGO: Black Star Project: Commencement Remarks By First Lady Michelle Obama for Bowie State University:
But most of all, to the Bowie State University class of 2013, congratulations. (Applause.) Oh, congratulations. You don't know how proud we all are of you. Just look at you. We're so proud of how hard you worked, all those long hours in the classroom, in the library. Oh, yeah. Amen. (Laughter.) All those jobs you worked to help pay your tuition. Many of you are the first in your families to get a college degree. (Applause.) Some of you are balancing school with raising families of your own. (Applause.) So I know this journey hasn't been easy. I know you've had plenty of moments of doubt and frustration and just plain exhaustion. Read in Full >>
