Prince George’s County Health Department Commemorates World AIDS Day
(LARGO, MD—November 30, 2011) - The Prince George’s County Health Department in collaboration with the Prince George’s Community College will sponsor a World AIDS Day event on December 1, 2011 11 am to 3 pm at Prince George’s Community College, Community Rooms A, B and C.
World AIDS Day is an international day of action, occurring each year on December 1 to raise awareness of the global HIV/AIDS epidemic caused by the spread of HIV infection and to reduce the spread of the disease through education. This year’s international theme is “Leading with Science, Uniting for Action”, and Prince George’s County’s theme is “Testing Reveals, Waiting Conceals”.
Prince George’s County has the second-highest number of cases for both HIV and AIDS in the state of Maryland. Nationally it is estimated that there are 56,300 new HIV infections a year. This year’s World AIDS Day event includes presentations and performances that will help to prevent new HIV cases by heightening awareness and providing prevention and testing education.
