TONIGHT: 7 pm: "Keep It Moving" with Marsha Jews on WEAA 88.9 fm, featuring Congressman Cummings, Isaiah Washington
From the Desk of Marsha Jews, 9.17.12
We are pleased to announce that we will have Isaiah Washington, actor and author of "A Man From Another Land" join us tomorrow. His journey to find his "roots" has taken him to the Motherland. Isaiah will share his adventure as he strives to embrace his American and African identity. In this inspirational memoir, the Grey's Anatomy actor explains how filling in the gaps of his past led him to discover a new passion: helping those less fortunate. DNA testing revealed that Washington was descended from the Mende people, who today live in Sierra Leone. For many people, the story would end with the results of the search; for Isaiah, it had just begun. Discovering his roots has given him a new purpose, to lead an inspirational life defined by faith and charity. After visiting Sierra Leone, and researching the country and its needs, Washington forged a strong relationship with the Mende people, and was inducted as Chief Gondobay Manga in May 2006. He established The Gondobay Manga Foundation to institute many improvements suggested by the country's people, addressing educational concerns, practical issues (road building, water supply, and electricity), and rehabilitative projects. Dual citizenship has been a dream of African-Americans such as W.E.B. DuBois, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, but Washington became the first to realize that honor in 2008. A twofold milestone, it was also the first time an African president granted citizenship based on DNA. Isaiah will recount his journey in Washington, D.C. during the Congressional Black Caucus.
We often speak of the "State of the Black Family" how it is operating, stability, nurturing or whether some how there needs to be some type of intervention. Amazingly, we tend to forget about all that is wonderful in our community and our families. There are families poised to take ownership, responsibility and leadership and families that have paved the way as beacons for those who are to follow with our next generation.
Neighbor to Family will celebrate their upcoming anniversary and discuss their admirable mission which is to revolutionize foster care by keeping siblings together while building healthier families and stronger communities. The Lake Sisters will receive the "2012 Neighbor To Family Sibling Award" each sister in this family has led an incredibly accomplished life and two of the sisters will share their stories and how important the support system they had led to the four achieving heights, for many, unimaginable. Dr. Donna Lake McCarter and Dr. Jannette Lake Dates along with the Executive Director of Neighbor to Family, Donna McCarter will discuss their story and the Foundation and how we can all become involved.
Also on Monday at 7:00pm: We are proud to host Congressman Elijah Cummings, who has served the people of Maryland's 7th District since 1996, we are honored to have him represent neighborhoods across Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Howard County. Cummings is one of the most progressive leaders of the United States Congress. In 2007, he founded the Maryland grass roots campaign that successfully worked for Barack Obama's election as President of the United States.
Believing that our children are the living messages that we send to the future, Congressman Cummings is committed to ensuring that all Americans - now and into the future - will have access to high quality and affordable healthcare, a world-class education, good jobs that pay a living wage, clean water and clean air, and a strong economy that works for this nation's working families.
We will explore the upcoming Congressional Black Caucus and Congressman Elijah Cummings' role as moderator and host of a jobs workshop with the U.S. Department of Labor and the Baltimore City Mayor's Office of Employment Development on Tuesday, September 18th and moderator and serving as honorary host for a health and wellness symposium on Friday, September 21st.

The Glover Report: An Open Letter to the Memory of Malcolm X: 2013:
In retrospect, the book would be ammunition and food for me in a 1980's world where Black America was about to be hit with crack cocaine amidst the Iran-Contra-Crack experiment funded by this government and led by Colonel Oliver North. Little did I know that I would be thrown into another domestic war - and that this book would serve me well as a guide. I now understand that Malcolm was giving suggestions on how to digest America without losing one's mind. Read in Full >>
