To many, Milton Glaser is the embodiment of American graphic design during the latter half of this century. Born in 1929, Glaser co-founded the revolutionary Pushpin Studios in 1954, founded New York Magazine with Clay Felker in 1968, established Milton Glaser, Inc. in 1974, and teamed with Walter Bernard in 1983 to form the publication design firm WBMG. His artwork has been featured in exhibits worldwide, including one-man shows at both the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. His work is in the permanent collections of many museums. Glaser also is a renowned graphic and architectural designer with a body of work ranging from the iconic logo I © New York to complete graphic and decorative programs for the restaurants in the World Trade Center. Glaser is an influential figure in both the design and education communities and has contributed essays and granted interviews extensively on design.
Nick Dewar was born in Scotland. He grew up in a small fishing town on the East Coast and attended Art School in Glasgow. Since then, he has lived in Prague, London, New York and on a sheep farm in Cumbria. He currently lives in Southern California with his cheesemonger/scientist wife, two small cats and a gaggle of neurotic tomato plants. In 2006, he took a year off to concentrate on collecting exotic ailments and travel around the world. Illustration has been his sole occupation since leaving art school more than 15 years ago, and indeed it is doubtful that he could actually hold down a proper job if asked. His work has appeared in magazines, in cinemas, on billboards, in books and next to the telephone. He has published in countries as far flung as China and Iceland but mostly work comes from Americans. Nick admires the work of E. McKnight Kauffer, the Steinberg brothers, Anthony Valonis, Eric Fraser, Earl Oliver Hurst and Ivor Cutler. However, inspiration mostly comes from crackly music and wandering about in a perpetual daze. His spare time is spent ministering to the demands of the tomato plants and eating fine cheeses.
The Heads of State is the design and illustration studio of Jason Kernevich and Dustin Summers founded in Philadelphia in 2002. Together they have garnered dozens of awards for their posters, illustrations and book covers that combine a restrained graphic style with their sharp intellect. Clients include The New York Times, Penguin, The School of Visual Arts, Wired magazine, as well as musical acts R.E.M. and Wilco. Together they teach at Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia, where they both studied. Visit https://www.theheadsofstate.com/#/home.php for more information about The Heads of State.
Scott Roberts has been making pictures his whole life and has worked as a freelance illustrator for 25 years. His bold, graphic illustrations communicate concepts with economical use of imagery and a lack of visual clutter. Awards include The Illustrators Club of Washington, Print's Regional Design Annual, Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington, Society of Publication Designers, Society of Illustrators of Los Angeles and Society of Illustrators in New York. Roberts lives and works in Bel Air, Md

TGR: Will Leronia Josey Make County History?:
Baltimore County Councilman Ken Oliver could have his hands full this election season - that is, if Ms. Josey decides to put her bid in for his seat. While Oliver is the first black to serve on the County Council, a loss to Josey would make her the first black woman to serve on the Baltimore County Council - a crew that consists mostly of white males. Move over, guys!
A black president; a possible black governor; seems only logical to me.

Jim Morrison said that ‘whoever controls the media controls the mind!’ Yet today’s media has seemed to have shifted it’s interest from responsible investigative reporting to a more instant on-demand format of sound bytes and hybrid headlines.
From the advent of social media tools such as YouTube and Facebook to the reduction in senior staff and publications of print media, the lack of real journalism has ceased to exist. However who is truly to be blamed, the reporters’ who spew the untruth without proper fact checks or the consumers of such information who propagate this gossip as factual?

Despite all that is messed up, I am taken back to grandma’s favorite hymn, #325, in the good ol’ Baptist Hymnal: “We’ll understand it better bye and bye.” I’m taken back to the praying man’s visit every Monday at 4 pm and the long, long prayers he would utter. I think of drinking tea and eating Graham crackers with grandpop before grandma got home.
Friends, it is easy to focus on the negative. It is easy to throw the towel in on life. It is easy to concede, to give up, to quit. I don’t know about you, but I refuse to do so. I just can’t. I won’t. There is a certain sense of entitlement of expanded territory that I simply demand of myself and those around me, as ordained by God. I say, mediocrity is for the lame. This kid here expects the very best that God has to offer. Come hell or high water, I’ll just have to take the hits; but progress, I insist, is imminent.
