(BALTIMORE - November 25, 2011) — Coppin State University’s Coppin Repertory Theatre continues its 2011-2012 Testimonial Season with From the Mississippi Delta, the dramatic autobiography of the life of late Civil Rights activist, Dr. Endesha Ida Mae Holland. Performances run December 1-5, 2011 in the Theatre Lab, located on the lower level of the Grace Hill Jacobs Building on the North Avenue side of campus.

From the Mississippi Delta retraces Holland’s impoverished upbringing in segregated Greenwood, Mississippi and her activism during the Civil Rights Movement. Her transformative journey is an uplifting story of struggle and success, against incredible odds, that takes her from abject poverty, to prostitution, to a Ph.D., to success as a playwright.

Partially financed by Oprah Winfrey, From the Mississippi Delta made its Off-Broadway debut in 1991 at the Circle in the Square Downtown. Directed by Jonathan Wilson, it starred Cheryl Lynn Bruce, Sybil Walker and Jacqueline Williams.  The three actresses portrayed the author at various stages of her life and all the supporting characters, as well – black and white, young and old, men and women – who made Dr. Holland’s world come alive.  Set in 11 anecdotal scenes bridged by hymns and spirituals, the production ran for 218 performances.
