WHY:
Denver Nugget Star Carmelo Anthony and R&B artist Mario Barrett are hometown boys who are combining efforts to raise money for both of their foundations: “The Carmelo Anthony Foundation” and Mario’s “Do Right Foundation.” These foundations help underserved young people of Baltimore City. The weekend will consist of a kickoff event and softball game where Carmelo’s team and Mario's team will square-off to see who will be the victor for the weekend. From celebrity friends to political officials, everyone is participating in helping to raise funds for both foundations to continue their initiatives.
ABOUT THE “CARMELO ANTHONY FOUNDATION” AND “DO RIGHT FOUNDATION”
“The Carmelo Anthony Foundation” and Mario’s “Do Right Foundation” have been committed to giving back to Baltimore City children from the very beginning. Both young stars want to continue those efforts and felt it was a need to come together and combine resources for this fundraising weekend. These young stars are barely 25, but their commitment to Baltimore and its youth population is way beyond their years. In 2006, Carmelo Anthony was named by “The Giving Back Fund” as the 8th most philanthropic celebrity for that year. Mario’s struggle as a child dealing with a drug-addicted mother helped him form his foundation which aids kids dealing with the same issues. With their missions, they have come together and plan to collaborate on future common goals and projects for next year to further help youngsters pursue careers in music – particularly since Carmelo has a music label, “Krossover Entertainment”, and Mario is a R&B recording artist.

A state of emergency: National Guard in hummers

"The same ol' story in New Orleans" - Jay Z
(BALTIMORE - February 9, 2010) - According to one Baltimore City Police officer stationed in Sandtown, downtown is plowed, Baltimore County is plowed, Carroll County is plowed (he lives there), but he didn't understand why communities - like in West Baltimore - were still left undone.
Fender-benders are not uncommon. The perpetual struggle between pedestrian rights and drivers' fear of getting stuck is ubiquitous. The question remains: Does anybody care about less affluent communities in one of the richest state's in the nation?
Yeah, yeah! We heard the governor announce there would be no additional funds for snow plowing.
Maybe we have to appeal to Pres. Barack Obama to send "state of emergency" dollars directly to municipalities ... like Baltimore. Or, maybe directly outsource dollars to snow removal companies. Whatever the case, this is some bull feces.
In a city where citizens get taxed to death for everything from parking tickets to cell phones, where is the love? Like the songwriter sings, "Ain't no love in the heart of the city!"
