Rapper Remy MA Retains Attorney William H. “Billy” Murphy Jr.
Murphy continues a legacy of legal excellence
(BALTIMORE – August 5, 2008) – Remy “Remy Ma” Smith, who was convicted of assault, weapons possession, and attempted coercion has retained the legal services of noted trial attorney William “Billy” Murphy Jr. Murphy, a former State Circuit Court Judge based in Baltimore. Murphy is one of America’s most successful and prominent trial lawyers.
Murphy gained national recognition in 1998 by gaining the acquittal of fight promoter Don King on federal charges of defrauding Lloyd’s of London in New York City. Murphy, a senior partner in the Murphy Firm based in Baltimore, has represented rappers DMX, Missy Elliott, Red Man, and Mary J. Blige.
“With the addition of Mr. Murphy, Ravenell and Levitt, I now believe I have assembled a team that will have the might and expertise to tell my side of the story,” said Ms. Smith. “I am confident that after hearing everything, my side will prevail. Mr. Murphy comes highly recommended and I am pleased that he has agreed to lead my defense team.”
“We are pleased to handle Remy Ma’s appeal. We are confident that when we present all of the facts, the public for the first time will get a true picture of what actually happened; and Remy will be vindicated,” said Mr. Murphy.
Murphy will be assisted on the appeal by his partner, Kenneth Ravenell, and New York Attorney Richard Levitt.

Most recently, Murphy was successful in reversing a 1.6 million dollar verdict against rapper DMX, and helping to secure a $35 million dollar civil judgment for Former Baltimore Ravens All-Pro Defensive End Michael McCrary. Murphy was also recently featured in the critically acclaimed HBO series ‘The Wire’.

I didn’t realize until I received many emails after the first posting that a person being passionate about the arts and politics in equal measure was such a rarity. In fact, I thought it common knowledge that the two were connected indefinitely. I thought it appropriate that this be my post for the year because it will set the platform for the articles that will follow in weeks to come. I was invited to write here because I am an Independent, as I explained before. I am an Independent because of my understanding of America and its purpose. The arts and philosophy have helped to shape those ideas for me just as they did our founding fathers. Read in Full >>
TGR: BET: "Big Ass Chain"? Enough Is Enough!:
BET, in my best estimation, is a profit-driven entity like any other business. However, black America deserves so much more. BET depicts black people as savages with animalistic and materialistic ambitions. BET, from my perspective, condones drug dealing and orgies, popping bottles and partying, and avoids the true beauty of the black experience in America. Somewhere along the line, some industry executives have told our young and beautiful artists that in order to make money, they have to be murderous thugs, whores and prostitutes. Read in Full >>
