Baltimore State’s Attorney Candidate Ivan Bates Statement On City Reaching 100 Homicides For 2018

As Homicides Continue, Bates Reiterates Focus On Violent Repeat Offenders and Success As A Homicide Prosecutor
(BALTIMORE – May 9, 2018) – Today. Wednesday, May 9, 2018, Attorney Ivan Bates released the following statement regarding Baltimore City reaching 100 homicides in 2018 after a 16 year old was shot and killed last night on the basketball court of a local recreation center. Last night’s victim was the second teen to be killed in less than one week.  Baltimore began the year with the shooting death of another 16 year old victim.
“When violent crime is up, the criminals are winning and our city is losing,” Bates said.  “When we’ve lost the ability to protect even our youngest residents from violent crime, then we know that change is long overdue.  Now more than ever, we see the difference a State’s Attorney can make when that office is headed by experienced leadership that can ensure skilled prosecutors are no longer leaving in droves, and we are no longer allowing violent repeat offenders back on our streets due to incompetent prosecutions.”
Bates has more than two decades of experience as an attorney — including never losing a single murder case as a homicide prosecutor. As a candidate, Bates has pledged to use his experience to rebuild the City’s States Attorney’s Office by more effectively recruiting and retaining skilled prosecutors.  He has also called for adopting a “Community Prosecution” model, where experienced prosecutors are assigned to each District in the city with a focus on the relevant crimes to that District.
