Given the events of the last few days involving the unfortunate death of a Prince George’s County Police officer in the line of duty and the mysterious death of one of the suspects arrested for that killing, and who died while in police custody, the 178 at-large members of the NAACP are again asking “Where is the leadership of the current Prince George’s County Branch of the NAACP?” We have yet to hear from that organization on any aspect of this incident.
Suspect In Officer's Killing Dies In Jail
(Prince George’s County – June 30, 2008) - A major incident has occurred in Prince George’s County and Members of the Greater Beltway Coalition are questioning the leadership and relevance of the current NAACP branch. We are not an NAACP branch but are currently seeking an additional branch in Prince George’s County.
Given the events of the last few days involving the unfortunate death of a Prince George’s County Police officer in the line of duty and the mysterious death of one of the suspects arrested for that killing, and who died while in police custody, the 178 at-large members of the NAACP are again asking “Where is the leadership of the current Prince George’s County Branch of the NAACP?” We have yet to hear from that organization on any aspect of this incident. The failure of the current NAACP branch to adequately address either the county’s crime issues in general or to call for a speedy and thorough investigation into the unexplained death of one of the suspects in the County Correctional Facility, calls into question its leadership and its relevance.
It is obvious the residents of Prince George’s County are not well served by the current NAACP Branch and they deserve another one--one that is more in touch with the issues of the day and more importantly, one that is more responsive when dealing with hot-topic issues such as crime, education, economics, and public policy affecting Prince George's County.
A new NAACP Branch is necessary in order to help the citizens of Prince George’s County address the many issues we face today and most definitely issues of crime and punishment.
