County Executive Ike Leggett To Host Governor at CountyStat Session on Overtime:
County Executive Isiah Leggett will host Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley at a session of Montgomery County’s new CountyStat program, which will focus on the issue of overtime work within the Fire and Rescue Service and the departments of Police, Public Works and Transportation, and Correction and Rehabilitation. GOVERNOR O’MALLEY TOURS MARYLAND CORRECTIONAL TRAINING CENTER, MEETS WITH CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS:
Yesterday, Governor Martin O’Malley visited the Maryland Correctional Training Center (MCTC), where he toured the facility, met with Correctional Officers, and toured the MCTC K9 Unit. MD Democratic Party Update: Maryland Democrats Complete Convention Delegation:
The Maryland Democratic State Central Committee this morning put the final stamp of approval on the list of 99 delegates and 12 alternates who will attend the Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado on August 25th. All of Maryland’s delegates to the Democratic National Convention have now been named. Today, 24 pledged “add-on” delegates were allocated to each presidential candidate in proportion to the statewide primary vote. Sen. Hillary Clinton received 9 “add-ons” and Sen. Barack Obama received 15. The Maryland Democratic State Central Committee voted overwhelmingly for the delegates approved by each presidential candidate’s campaign. Read in Full >>

In the tension between raising revenues (taxes, fees, surcharges, etc.) and cutting programs, there exists yet a third path: making government operate more efficiently. The following bills reduce waste, encourage competition for state contracts, and trim bureaucracies. This gets into complicated and arcane areas where the wheels of government grind slowly. Boring? Yes. Important? Absolutely. With procurement (State purchases) running at about $10 billion of the State's $30 billion budget, even small percentage savings translate to big bucks. Read in Full >>
