DC Primary is today

(ANNAPOLIS - September 9, 2008) - The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland (LBCM), the group of black state legislators from across Maryland, is hosting its Legislative Black Caucus Weekend from October 31st through November 1st in Annapolis.

According to the new Chair, Delegate Veronica Turner, the weekend will feature a Youth Summit on the 31st, workshops on that Saturday, and end with a breakfast and gala that Sunday at the Navy Yard (Nov. 1).

Delegate Turner, incidentally, is campaigning today for DC Councilman-at-Large Kwame Brown who is running for re-election in today's Primary. Along the same lines, the former Mayor of DC, Marion Barry, is also running for re-election for Councilman in Ward 8.

According to the LBCM website, "The Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland came into existence out of political necessity.  In the American Two Party System, politics is a matter of adversaries and alliances.  It is, therefore, the highest political wisdom to have stable alliances with and among those of similar interests.  Thus, it was natural that when a sufficient number of black legislators had been elected they would form themselves into such a grouping. The significant addition of a black collective legislative voice was incorporated into the Maryland Political Landscape in 1970.  The Caucus has increased from it original membership of 17 to its present complement of 43.  The attainment of this membership level is a particularly noteworthy elective accomplishment that heralds the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland as one of the largest groups of black legislators in the United States."

The new Caucus leadership, which was formerly headed by Baltimore's Sen. Verna L. Jones, includes Senator Cathy Pugh (1st Chair), Delegate Ayisha Braveboy (2nd Chair), and Baltimore's Delegate Shawn Tarrant.

Braveboy and Turner both represent Prince George's County in the Maryland legislature.
