(ANNAPOLIS – July 9, 2008) – Maryland Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown was named yesterday to the Democratic National Committee’s Platform Drafting Committee. The Drafting Committee, which will be led by Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano, is charged with drafting the Democratic Party’s platform in advance of the Party’s national convention in Denver.
“I am excited to be a member of the team that will develop and articulate a platform not just for the Democratic Party but for the entire nation. I look forward to working with all the committee members to ensure that we put forth a progressive and pragmatic platform that benefits every working American,” Lt. Governor Brown said. “After eight years of failed, divisive leadership in the White House, Senator Obama has inspired a new style of engaging leadership that will help reunite America .”

The drafting committee will lay out the Party’s policies on a full range of domestic, economic and foreign issues. Brown, who served for 10 months in Iraq and is a Colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves, brings the voice and experience of veterans to the drafting committee.
“It is important that we honor the brave men and women who put themselves in harm’s way on our behalf. I will work with the committee to ensure the Democratic Party maintains its longtime commitment to our veterans,” Brown said. “After eight years of failed, divisive leadership, Senator Obama has inspired a new style of engaging leadership that will unite America and pay tribute to those who have served.”
The drafting committee has scheduled a public hearing in Cleveland , Ohio for August 1 and will hold public platform meetings in local communities in the weeks before the Convention.
Former Vermont Governor and current Democratic National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said in a statement, “This process will empower Americans in all 50 states to make their voices heard as they help write the document that embodies our Party’s values and vision for the future.”
Brown is scheduled to attend the Democratic National Convention from August 25 to August 28.
