LT. GOVERNOR BROWN TO HOST PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY PUBLIC FORUM ON HEALTH ENTERPRISE ZONES PROGRAM AIMED AT ADDRESSING DISPARITIES

(OXON HILL - August 1, 2012) – Tomorrow, Lt. Governor Anthony G. Brown, the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, along with Prince George’s County Executive Rushern Baker, will hold a public forum at the Glassmanor Community Center on Maryland’s new Health Enterprise Zones (HEZ) program to reduce health disparities, an initiative developed by the Lt. Governor and passed by the General Assembly during the 2012 Legislative Session.  The forum is intended to educate the public on the purpose of the HEZ initiative, answer questions, and discuss the HEZ designation process that will occur in the fall. More information on the forum is available here.

The FY 2013 State budget includes $4 million to establish a pilot program of two to four Health Enterprise Zones throughout Maryland that will be established through a competitive application process.  A series of public forums are being held throughout the summer, followed by a report to the General Assembly, with applications accepted and reviewed in the fall.  The first HEZs are expected to be designated by the end of the year.  For more information on the HEZ program visit http://dhmh.maryland.gov/healthenterprisezones.

Lt. Governor Brown leads the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s efforts to reduce costs, expand access, and improve the quality of care for all Marylanders. Under the leadership of Governor O’Malley and Lt. Governor Brown, Maryland has implemented reforms that have expanded health coverage to nearly 335,000 Marylanders, half of whom are children, established Maryland’s Health Benefit Exchange, and put the State in position to maximize the Affordable Care Act (ACA).  Independent analysis by the Hilltop Institute at the University of Maryland Baltimore County has found that implementation of the ACA will benefit the state’s budget by $672 million through 2020, generate more than $3 billion in annual economic activity, cut the number of uninsured in half, and create more than 26,000 jobs.
